The Herman Hesse Festival
(forward by John Kay)

We wish to thank the mayor and people of Calw, as well as all those who attended our concert there, for making us feel so welcome and making our performance in Calw one of the most enjoyable of 2002. As you can see from Michael’s photos, the beautiful town and surrounding Black Forrest region made for a most memorable setting to play in. We felt privileged to have taken part in the Festival which honors the man and poet who wrote "Steppenwolf" and several other acclaimed works which are read throughout the world to this very day.
What gives his work such lasting power? The Dalai Lama in his letter to the town of Calw put it this way: "(he) inspired many of his readers with the importance of cultivating a sense of inner peace and personal freedom. I share his conviction that our human intelligence is better dedicated to peace and reconciliation than to war and annihilation, and his delight in the rich diversity of human life"

Presents

Ron, Danny, John with the gift plaques (each containing a commemorative nail) that we received.
The inscription on the back reads:

"In the course of renovation works in April 2002, this nail was taken from the house where the author Herman Hesse was born. These nails, of hand-wrought iron, estimated 1780 were found in the beams of the half-timbering in the eastern wall of this house. The nails were used to fix straw mats on the half-timbering to put on whitewash"
